Founder Member of the Clare Green Party. Elected member of Clare County Council, and Deputy Mayor Ennis Town Council, Member of Ennis West local area committee.
I am one of only 3 County Councillors that survived the near wipe out of the Green Party in June 2009 and the only elected representative the Green Party has in the in Munster and the West of Ireland .
I am committed to the principles of the Green Party and I am a loyal and hardworking member. My views and opinions can differ at times from the broader church of the Green Party, but my views and opinions differ from my colleagues on Clare County Council and Ennis Town Council. I have respect and regard for all politicians as long as they do not attempt to deceive the electorate with populist rhetoric.
It has been said that the greens have convinced themselves that the country needs them. That is not true. We never needed convincing, we know our policies are needed to give direction to the large political parties. These parties seek to represent everyone, and in doing so they lack the ability to make any radical policy change for fear of upsetting some part of their voter base. The small political party is where the direction of policy comes from in Irish governments. This has been called the tail wagging the dog but let me assure you the dog has no problem in being wagged by the tail. The dog can blame the tail for any mistake that happens. That is what is happening to the Green party at the moment I do believe the Green participation in Government has benefited this Country and our participation in government has been good for the Greens. It has been a steep learning curve and the insights and responsibilities of being a Government Party have brought strengths that will greatly assist the Greens in the future, that is if they have a future. The German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche , postulated “ That which does not kill us makes us stronger” The experience of being in Government has strengthened the Greens but it still has to be seen if it will kill us. I don’t think it will as the Green issues will require a Green Party to deal with.
